What is Moodle?

Moodle is a virtual learning environment. It is an online environment designed to collaborate with others in the classroom as well as other settings.

See the attachment below. It is a slideshow created for a seminar about Moodle and it's uses in the classroom and in our district. The slides move a little quick, so just use the pause button on the left side of the slideshow to stop on any slide.

What is a Blog? (Watch this video from YouTube to find out)

A blog is a website, that you can create for free. It is a place to write down your thoughts, opinions, good news, current events, education items, and share your findings with other people. It is a place to write. It is a place to be free to express yourself. What makes your writing become a blog, is the linking ability you use. A great blog will link to other sites. The sites are then more resources and may contain video, pictures, a log of information or more writing. At the end of every blog you will also "tag" words that will help to define what is contained in that blog. "Tag" is a key word or term associated with the blog you are posting.

Why blog?

That is a good question. Until recently, I wasn't sure why either, but I found that it keeps my thoughts all in one neat place. I can go back and read what I wrote, and sometimes.. I even say to myself, did "I" write that? Wow!

For schools, blogging has been shown to increase writing. Many articles have been published lately stating how blogging is helping to increase students literacy rate and writing skills. It is also a place to receive feeback and collaborate with others. Also, much of the information written about in the article was obtained from the PEW Internet Research Report done on the topic.

Analysis of above Article:

An analysis of the eSchool News article mentioned above is written by Ryan Bretag on the TechLearning Blog. What Ryan is saying, is that there is some misleading information being passed along through the article. Here is what Ryan mentions in his post:

"Here is the problem. There is nothing in the survey that identifies blogging as the reason for the increase in writing or the increase value in writing. Many of these students could have appreciated writing before blogging and because of this value, found blogging to be a natural extension of such passion. Many of these bloggers could have been writing prolifically before become bloggers but found blogging as another outlet. It very well could be that “blogging helps encourage teen writing”, but none of this was made clear in the research even though some want to grab onto anything to prove just how valuable web 2.0 is in education. Instead of making assumptions, let’s ask these questions and perform the research that is needed to justify these statements."

Teens and Writing Instruction Best Practices
While the study had many interesting points, an area that really stood out to me was what teens felt motivated them to write and how they believed schools could improve writing instruction. The survey showed that many students saw the following as important in these areas: - Choice
- Opportunity for Creativity
- High Expectations/Challenge from Adults
- Audience
- Interesting Curricula
- In-class time
- Computer-based writing tools
- Feedback Rather intriguing is how well these ideas align with research on best practices in writing instruction: a supportive environment of peers and adults, regular in-class time including workshops, choice and ownership, authentic writing opportunities, modeling, and frequent, constructive feedback to name a few.

Horizon 2008 Project
This year I was lucky to be a part of the Horizon 2008 Project. This project is a collaborative effort between two teachers, one in Qatar (Julie Lindsay) and the other from Georgia (Vicki Davis). It invoved over 200 students from all over the world to collaborate on different technology issues. Read on about the award winning project. I was a judge for the video portion of the project. It was very interesting to see how students from Japan, America and Qatar view technology and how they compiled their video.

Why Web 2.0 and Technology? Home

Do you need help, resources or just some more information on how to integrate technology and web 2.0 tools into your classroom curriculum? Is all of this technology stuff too much and you need some guidance? This wiki has been created to help you get your feet wet, put the latest and greatest technology information (as well as general classroom lesson resources) at your fingertips and make sense of this ever changing technological world we live in!

Help with how to use this site:

This site is built on a wiki. A wiki is a website that is editable. It is free to sign up for an account as an educator. Wiki's are useful for collaboration as well as compiling information to share with others. This wiki is by invitation only, and only people who have been invited can make edit's or contributions to the site. There is no need to know any HTML programming or any coding at all. It is point and click! (I even sent an email to them and they removed any of the advertisments - even though they were education related)
Across Top of Site - Use the buttons to take you to different parts of the wiki. You may want to start a discussion with another teacher, add photos to the photo gallery, or go to the members page to see who has signed up.
Left Side of Page: Wiki Pages - The pages are set up by category. If there is an arrow, click on the name of the page to bring up sub categories of that topic.
Page by Page - Each page will have an explanation of the information contained on it.
Highlighted words - The light blue highlighted words are links to other sites with more information about that topic, which may be blogs, websites, wiki's, etc.

All students K-12, must fulfill the State of NH Department of Education Technology Requirements - When on the NHEON website, look for "the Strategy for Organizing and Reviewing Portfolios in the rubric" and click on the Portfolio Cube Graphic. This is the newly updated strategy that the state will be using to implement the newly adopted technology standards.

It is a webbased application, in which you sign up for an account, and bookmark all of your favorite websites using things called "tags". "Tags" are a short word that is used to group your information so it can be easily retrieved in the future. Be thoughtful when choosing your tags.

The best part of using social networking sites is that you can share your site with others. You can also form groups of people who add to a site and also gather important websites in one place as a list, for a classroom project. Here is an example of how we use them in our computer class. (our project is a PSA on either anti-smoking or anti-violence)

Why are these valuable to the classroom? You can create lists that you can share with the students, which will eliminate any "web surfing"!

Really Simple Syndication - RSS Feeds bring the latest and greatest updates to you. You do not have to go looking for them or waste time searching for information.

Why would I use it in education?

Well, what if you were studying something in the news as a current event, such as the Earth Quake in China , or the Presidential Election. You would choose sites, sign up for their RSS feed, and any update would automatically be sent to your RSS Feed folder. The news comes to you. Any time a blog, wiki or any other website updates the topic you find interesting, you are notified! What a time saver? PLUS, The information is direct to you and again, the student would not be "web surfing" around, since it is in one neat package.

Creating an account on Google is a great place to keep your RSS feeds all in one place. You sign up for a google account and then go to reader to start saving your RSS feeds.

This is a Wetpaint Wiki. A wiki is a website set up for you to create, add to, collaborate in, change, edit, thoughts and content.

The worlds biggest Wiki that I can think of is Wikipedia. It is sometimes frowned upon for students to use wikipedia as a source for their research, but I say it should be considered as one of their sources. It may not be the main source, but it can be a starting point or an informational site . Wikipedia is the largest encyclopedia online and can be updated and edited by anyone. R ead About Wikipedia and the amazing statistics. It is argued that it is one of the most instantaneous, direct lines of communication and transferrence of current events available to us in the world. It can report news faster than the television or radio. It is instantly updated with live footage, photos, and editorials of what is happening at that very moment. Where else on this planet can people share such amazing and immediate knowledge?

Why would I use a wiki in education?
I was fortunate to judge a global learning project called Horizon Project 2008 this year that was created on a wiki. This global learning project was inspired by the book, The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman. The project started as The Flat Classroom project and evolved over time into the new Horizon Project. The educators, Vicki Davis (Camilla, Georgia) and Julie Lindsay (Qatar Academy), have won numerous awards in the technology field through their wonderful collaborative work. The wiki enabled the students from all over the globe to collaborate on a project in one learning environment. There was no need for email and piecing parts of the project together. With equal access to the same page, every member of each team is able to edit their page and add content.
