What is Web 2.0 anyway and why should it be used in Education?

  • According to an interview between Steve Hargadon and Tim O'Reilly, In order to do this, you must first understand the new ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for students recently updated in 2007. With the ever changing technology and the constant release of web 2.0 tools, education must keep up with the latest and greatest information available. By teaching our student's how to utilize these tools as well as educating them on how to be good "digital citizens", we as educators are preparing today's youth for a promising future.

Why would I want to use it?

  • Web 2.0 is an amazing way to collaborate in the classroom. Web 2.0 is free. Web 2.0 is a term coined for open source software available to you on the internet for you to use, share and create many amazing projects.
  • Blogs, Wiki's, Podcasting and RSS feeds are all different types of Web 2.0 tools and some of the most common. Through free software, you are able to create projects to share with the world or keep private if you wish.

Things to think about before you begin with a classroom:

  • A lot of the programs require you to sign in with an email account. That makes it difficult for students to create accounts if they do not have valid email accounts.
  • Before you create accounts and use any of the open programs, you should consult your Authorized Use Policy through your district. You should check to make sure all of the necessary security precautions are being thought of prior to using with a classroom.
